15 songs; cassette tape also available recorded by the Swedish group Fjedur.  This is the classic collection edited and notated by Swede Anders Nyberg in 1984.  Songs are suitable for all voicings.  Introductory notes on background of music and on performance.  This is the collection from which many subsequent publications draw their arrangements.

Twelve indigenous songs from South Africa in the original languages with guidelines for the meaning;
edited and arranged by Johann van der Sandt and Niel van der Watt  SATB voicing; texts in score are all original language, English translation prefaces each piece.  No pronunciation guides but the languages are generally pure non-dipthong vowels. All are secular except the first piece.  The final work “Tshwahlane/African Dusk” is a slightly more extended work written for the East Rand Youth Choir in 1994.  An interesting and unique collection.

Sing Freedom! Songs of South African Life

A collection of 35 indiginous South African songs divided into Church Songs, Children’s and Youth Songs, Work Songs, and Songs of Liberation and Protest.  Voicings are SATB with a few unison or 2pt.  Each song gives the words with English translation, a pronunciation guide, and a ‘notes’ section.  Songs cover a very wide range of the So. African peoples.  Editor Margaret Hamilton wrote an excellent 12 page introductory section which provides valuable information on this collection as well as the communal singing tradition in So. Africa.
