  • Some Asian churches have developed rich resources in music, worship and the arts during the last century, but are little known or unavailable to most outsiders. Many hymns or art works have been created for particular worship celebrations, but have since been forgotten or discarded, and most have never been published. I have had the privilege of visiting many Asian countries and churches since 1969, and have come across many valuable resources.

The materials included here are those that I have collected during the last three decades, and are now housed in Hiong-im Gak-hong* (Center for the Study and Promotion of Taiwanese Church Music) at Tainan Theological College and Seminary. They may only show the tip of the iceberg; they are by no means inclusive. Hymnals of different countries and denominations are not listed here, unless they show substantial number of indigenous hymns.  Likewise, since most of the official prayer books or liturgies in Asia are not much different from those of their respective mother churches in the West, they are also omitted.  I have chosen only the published works which are either in English or in original languages but the music exhibit native styles, and are in staff or cipher notations.  Countries, such as India and Sri Lanka, have rich materials but are mostly without notation, and would be unintelligible to outsiders, hence omitted.

For practical purposes, the resources are listed and annotated according to countries and are in the chronological order.
